Project Overview

A leading concrete service provider in Davao City, Philippines, is responsible for the transportation and management of bulk materials such as sand and aggregates.

The site handles approximately 100 dump trucks per day. Previously, the customer mainly relied on truck scales for transportation measurement. However, weight data could not directly reflect the actual volume of loaded materials. In addition, traditional measurement processes required vehicles to stop and rely on manual recording, making it difficult to meet the efficiency requirements of high-frequency truck operations.

To improve data collection efficiency and achieve automated measurement and tracking of truck load volume, the customer deployed the VI-TVMS-D Dynamic Truck Volume Measurement System developed by Vi LiDAR.

Based on LiDAR scanning technology, the system captures the three-dimensional profile data of the same truck under empty and loaded conditions, automatically calculates the material volume, and integrates License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology to associate vehicle information with measurement results for digital transportation management.


Project Challenges

For aggregate transportation applications, truck scales can provide vehicle weight information, but they cannot directly obtain the three-dimensional shape and actual volume of loaded materials.

Meanwhile, under high-frequency truck operation conditions, traditional weighing processes still require vehicles to stop sequentially, involve manual data recording, and require additional data management work.

With around 100 dump trucks entering and leaving the site every day, the customer required a more efficient approach to collect transportation data and improve volume measurement and management.

The main requirements included:

  • Reduce measurement waiting time caused by traditional weighing processes;
  • Obtain actual material volume information beyond weight data;
  • Reduce manual recording and data management workload;
  • Link vehicles, measurement results, and historical records for easier tracking.

Therefore, the customer needed an automated solution that could support frequent truck movements while integrating volume measurement, vehicle identification, and data management functions.


LiDAR-Based Measurement Solution

To meet the customer’s requirements, Vi LiDAR deployed the VI-TVMS-D Dynamic Truck Volume Measurement System at the truck passage area.

The system consists of:

  • LiDAR scanner;
  • Control cabinet;
  • License Plate Recognition (LPR) system;
  • Volume measurement software platform.

The equipment is installed along the truck passage route. Vehicles do not need to stop during measurement. The system collects data from the same truck under empty and loaded conditions through the same scanning area.

The measurement process includes the following steps:

1. Empty Truck Scanning: Establishing the Reference Model

Before loading materials, the empty truck passes through the scanning area. The system captures the vehicle’s LiDAR scan data and creates a three-dimensional reference model of the truck body and loading space.

2. Loaded Truck Scanning: Capturing Loaded Conditions

After the truck is loaded with aggregate materials, it passes through the same scanning area again. The system collects the updated LiDAR scan data under loaded conditions and reconstructs the three-dimensional profile of the loaded truck.

3. Point Cloud Comparison: Automatic Volume Calculation

The software automatically compares the empty and loaded scan data models. By calculating the volume difference between the two states, the system determines the actual volume of loaded materials.

4. Vehicle Identification and Data Tracking

Through integrated LPR technology, the system automatically identifies the vehicle and associates the license plate number, scanning time, and volume measurement result, enabling convenient data tracking and management.


Key Technology Advantages

1. Dynamic Measurement Without Vehicle Stopping

The VI-TVMS-D system supports data acquisition while trucks pass through the measurement area at low speed, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop for measurement.

At the customer site, trucks pass through the scanning area at approximately 5–10 km/h. After scanning is completed, the system automatically processes the point cloud data and generates the volume calculation result within seconds.

2. Point Cloud-Based Volume Calculation

The system uses LiDAR scanning technology to capture spatial information of the truck and loaded materials, reconstructing a three-dimensional model for volume calculation.

By comparing empty and loaded truck conditions, the system calculates the actual aggregate loading volume and provides three-dimensional data support for transportation management.

3. Vehicle Identification and Data Association

The system integrates LPR technology to automatically identify vehicles and associate measurement results with the corresponding truck.

Users can view measurement records through the software platform, including vehicle information, scanning time, and loading volume, enabling digital tracking of transportation data.


Software Platform and Visualization

The supporting software platform provides comprehensive measurement data viewing and management functions, including:

  • Real-time point cloud visualization;
  • Vehicle scanning status monitoring;
  • License plate recognition results;
  • Automatic volume calculation;
  • Historical record query;
  • Measurement data export;
  • System parameter configuration.

Through the three-dimensional model generated from LiDAR scan data, users can visually view the spatial profile of the truck and loaded materials, improving the transparency of measurement results.

Project Results

The VI-TVMS-D system has been successfully deployed and put into operation at the customer site.

By introducing the dynamic truck volume measurement solution, the customer has achieved automated measurement of transported material volume, reduced manual measurement and recording requirements, and improved the efficiency of transportation data collection.

Through vehicle identification and measurement data integration, the system also enables unified transportation data management and historical record tracking.

This project demonstrates the application value of LiDAR technology in aggregate transportation management and provides a more efficient and digitalized measurement solution for bulk material transportation operations.
